    Seit seinem Hirnschlag kann er nicht mehr laufen, starrt mit gläsernen Augen vor sich hin, bisweilen nuschelt er mit zittrigen Lippen ein paar Worte, die seine Hofschranzen dann laut und deutlich wiederholen und zu ganzen Sätzen ergänzen. Algeriens Präsident Abdelaziz Bouteflika ist ein Pflegefall, verlässt kaum noch seine Villa am Stadtrand von Algier. Seit Mai 2012 ist er nicht mehr öffentlich aufgetreten. Lediglich drei oder vier Mal hat er seit seiner Rückkehr aus der Pariser Militärklinik Val-de-Grâce ausländische Staatsgäste zu verkrampften Mini-Audienzen empfangen, zuletzt US-Außenminister John Kerry.
