Um diese Schande wett zumachen, beschlossen sie, sich an den Bani Israel blutig zu rächen und sie endgültig aus Palästina zu vertreiben. Sie sammelten alle kampffähigen Männer und zogen gegen Jerusalem. Die Bani Israel erfuhren, dass sich das Philisterheer ihrer Hauptstadt näherte, bereit zum tödlichen Angriff, und Angst ergriff dasVolk. Alle griffen zu den Waffen und zogen mit ihrem König Talut den Philistern entgegen. Zu jener Zeit gab es unter den Bani Israel einen alten Mann, der viele Söhne hatte. Sie alle waren mit dem König ins Feld gezogen, bis auf Dawud, dem jüngsten von ihnen, der noch zu klein dazu war. Er blieb bei seinem alten Vater und hütete die Schafe. Dawud hatte eine außerordentlich schöne Stimme, und Allah gab ihm Lieder ein, die Seine Herrlichkeit priesen. Immer, wenn Dawud diese Lieder vortrug, war jeder gerührt, der sie hörte. Alle Vögel stimmten mit ein, und selbst die Berge blieben nicht still, sondern sangen das Echo zurück. Niemand ahnte, dass Allah Dawud auserwählt hatte, später Sein Gesandter zu werden. Aber wegen seiner Lieder war er schon als Kind im ganzen Land bekannt, und selbst der König ließ ihn manchmal holen, wenn er traurig und mutlos war, damit er seine Lieder hören konnte. Aber nun war der König mit seinem Heer in den Krieg gezogen, und in einem großen offenen Feld standen sich die beiden Heere gegenüber, das starke und schwer bewaffnete Philisterheer und die schwachen und furchtsamen Bani Israel. Plötzlich trat aus dem feindlichen Heer der Anführer hervor, der berüchtigte Jalut, der riesig groß und stark war. Er war außerordentlich stolz auf seine Kraft und ließ sich gern bewundern. Er rief; „He, wer will mit mir kämpfen? Heraus, wer einen Zweikampf mit mir wagt! Mich kann niemand schlagen." Da verließ auch die tapfersten Männer der Bani Israel der Mut. Keiner von ihnen war auch nur im entferntesten so groß und stark wie Jalut. Sie wussten nicht, was sie auf seine Herausforderung antworten sollten. Selbst König Talut fürchtete sich. Auf einmal kam der kleine Dawud von irgendwoher angelaufen. Er hatte die Schafe gehütet und war dabei in die Nähe des Schlachtfeldes gekommen. Und da war er nun. Er hörte die Herausforderung des Riesen, aber er hatte keine Angst vor ihm, denn er vertraute auf Allah, der mächtiger ist als alle anderen. Er rief dem verzweifelten König zu: „Ich will mit Jalut kämpfen." Die Männer der Bani Israel waren entsetzt. Der Junge hatte ja nicht einmal Waffen bei sich, nur eine Steinschleuder, wie sie Jungen manchmal bei sich tragen. Nicht einmal einen Helm hatte er, und als jemand ihm seinen eigenen Helm aufsetzen wollte, war dieser viel zu groß für Dawud. Trotzdem trat der Junge vor. Als Jalut ihn sah, war er beleidigt. „Was für ein Zwerg will mit mir kämpfen? Ihr wollt mich wohl zum Narren halten?" rief er. Aber er hatte kaum den Satz zu Ende gebracht, da legte Dawud einen Stein in die Schleuder und schoss ihn dem Riesen an die Schläfe. Jalut fiel um und war auf der Stelle tot. Da wurde das ganze feindliche Heer vom Schrecken ergriffen. Alles schrie durcheinander und rannte schließlich Hals über Kopf davon. Sogar ihre Waffen ließen sie liegen. Denn wenn die Bani Israel nur wenige Männer gegen ihr großes Heer ins Feld schickten, und wenn schließlich ein unbewaffneter Junge ihren großen Feldherrn mit einer Steinschleuder töten konnte, dann musste eine unbekannte Macht mit ihnen im Bunde sein. Die Männer der Bani Israel waren erstaunt und verblüfft über den unerwarteten Sieg. Sie schämten sich auch ein bisschen, weil sie erst von einem Jungen lernen mussten, auf Allah zu vertrauen.
