    ‫وُلد أسامة بن زيد رضى الله عنه عام 613 م قبل هجرة الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم بتسع سنين. أبوه الصحابي الجليل زيد بن حارثه وأمة أم أيمن.
    ورغم صغر سن أسامة فقد اشترك في كثير من الغزوات التي خاضها المسلمون لإعلاء راية الحق، فقد قاتل مع الصحابة وكان عمره لا يتجاوز خمسة عشر عاماً واشترك في غزوة مؤتة التي استشهد فيها والده زيد بن حارثة واشترك في فتح مكة وفي غزوة الخندق واشترك في محاربة المرتدين عن الإسلام في خلافة أبى بكر الصديق رضي الله عنه.
    أسامة قائد الجيش
    قرر الرسول صلي الله عليه وسلم تجهيز جيش كبير لقتال الروم الذين يهددون المسلمين، ورغم أن الجيش العظيم يضم عدداً كبيراً من كبار صحابة رسول الله إلا أن الرسول عليه الصلاة والسلام أمر أسامة بن زيد بتولي قيادة هذا الجيش حتى إن بعض الصحابة طلبوا من الرسول أن يولي قيادة الجيش قائداً كبير السن لخبرته في القتال، إلا أن الرسول أصر على تولي أسامة قيادة الجيش، وخرج أسامة بن زيد بالجيش ونزل في مكان يقال له ( الجرف) شمال المدينة وعندما اشتد المرض على الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم وانتقل إلى الرفيق الأعلى. سمع أسامة بالخبر فحزن حزنا شديداً ومعه كل الصحابة لحبهم الشديد لرسول الله فرجع الجيش إلى المدينة.
    وعندما تولى أبو بكر الصديق رضى الله عنه خلافة المسلمين بعد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أمر بخروج الجيش تحت قيادة أسامة بن زيد كما أمر الرسول قبل وفاته ونظراً لأدب أسامة بن زيد واحترامه لكبار الصحابة استأذن من خليفة المسلمين أبى بكر الصديق أن يولي على الجيش قائداً غيره إلا أن أبا بكر الصديق قال: " لو خطفتني الذئاب لم أرد قضاء قضي به رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم".
    الخليفة يودع الجيش
    وعندما انطلق الجيش لقتال الروم خرج أبو بكر الصديق يودع الجيش ماشيا على قدميه بينما أسامة بن زيد راكب على فرسه، فاستحى أسامة من خليفة رسول الله وقال له:
    " يا خليفة رسول الله لتركبن أو لأنزلن"
    فقال له الخليفة أبو بكر : " والله لانزلت ولا أركب وما علىَّ أن أغبر قدمي ساعة في سبيل الله"
    وظل أبو بكر الصديق رضى الله عنه يوصي جيش أسامة بعدم قتل الأطفال والنساء والشيوخ وعدم الخيانة والغدر وعدم قطع الأشجار وبعد مضي أربعين يوما من خروج الجيش لقتال الروم انتصر المسلمون على الروم انتصاراً عظيماً وألقوا في قلوب الروم الرعب حتى لا يهاجموا المسلمين مرة أخرى وكان هذا النصر بداية لانتصارات أخرى عديدة حققها المسلمون بعد ذلك.
    وبعد رجوع جيش أسامة للمدينة منتصراً فرح المسلمون فرحاً شديداً واستقبله أبو بكر الصديق رضي الله عنه استقبالاً عظيماً. رحم الله أسامة بن زيد القائد العظيم الذي حظي باحترام رسول الله وصحابته فقد كان يحفظ القرآن الكريم والأحاديث النبوية الشريفة وكان متفقهاً في الدين، شجاعاً في ساحة القتال يحترم قادته الكبار وينفذ ما يؤمر به حتى صار في يوم من الأيام قائداً عظيماً للجيش رغم صغر سنه وحقق انتصاراً رائعاً رفع راية الإسلام خفاقة !
