Dhun-Nun al-Misri wurde gefragt: „Wann hat ein Diener wirkliche Angst?" Er antwortete: „Wenn er in demselben Zustand wie ein Kranker ist, der Schutz bei Allah sucht, weil er Angst hat, dass sich seine Krankheit hinziehen wird." Abu'l-Qassim al-Hakim sagte: „Wer sich vor etwas fürchtet, flieht davor, während der, der sich vor Allah fürchtet, zu Ihm flieht." Al-Fudayl ibn 'Iyadh sagte: „Wenn ihr gefragt werdet ob ihr Allah fürchtet oder nicht, antwortet nicht; denn wenn ihr „Ja" sagt, würdet ihr lügen, und wenn ihr „Nein" sagt, würde dies bedeuten, dass ihr nicht an Ihn glaubt." Yahya ibn Mu'adh sagte: „Jeder schlechten Tat, die ein Gläubiger begeht, folgen zwei Konsequenzen: die Furcht vor der Bestrafung und die Hoffnung auf Vergebung." Al-Fudayl ibn 'Iyadh sagte: „Wer auch immer Allah fürchtet, der wird durch diese Furcht zu allem Guten geleitet." Musa ibn Mas'ud sagte: „Immer wenn wir in der Gesellschaft von Suffyan gesessen sind, hatten wir, aufgrund der Furcht und Panik, die wir in seinen Augen sehen konnten, das Gefühl, als ob uns das Feuer umringt hätte."
