Natürlich will keine werdende Mutter ihrem Kind vorsätzlich schaden. Doch manche Frauen hat die Nikotinsucht so fest im Griff, dass es ihnen nicht gelingt, mit dem Rauchen aufzuhören – nur vier von zehn Schwangeren schaffen es aus eigener Willenskraft. Dabei kann das Rauchen dem Kind erhebliche Schäden zufügen: Frühgeburten, Erkrankungen der Atemwege und sogar plötzlicher Kindstod können die Folge sein. Was passiert im Babybauch einer Raucherin? Das Nikotin der Schwangeren gelangt über die Plazenta in den Blutkreislauf des Kindes. Dadurch wird das Baby schlechter mit Sauerstoff und wichtigen Nährstoffen versorgt. Mögliche Folgen: Die Kinder sind untergewichtig und meistens auch kleiner. Je mehr die Schwangere raucht, desto geringer das Gewicht des Babys. Am sinnvollsten ist es, bereits mit dem Kinderwunsch das Rauchen einzustellen. Denn Nikotin hat auch schon einen negativen Einfluss auf die Fruchtbarkeit von Mann und Frau. Erschreckende Fötus-Aufnahmen Dass das Rauchen während der Schwangerschaft die Entwicklung eines ungeborenen Babys extrem beeinträchtigen kann, zeigen auch die 4D Scans, die im Rahmen einer Studie des James Cook University Hospitals in Middlesbrough veröffentlicht wurden. Die Studie zeigt, dass die ungeborenen Babys von rauchenden Müttern ungewöhnlich oft ihre Gesichter anfassen und ihren Mund bewegen. Ein mögliches Zeichen einer Entwicklungsverzögerung des zentralen Nervensystems. Normalerweise legen Ungeborene dieses Verhalten immer mehr ab, je älter und entwickelter sie sind – die Babys von Rauchern jedoch nicht.
